NDMA issues glacial flood alert for KP, Gilgit-Baltistan

Published on: June 27, 2026 11:08 PM

The National Disaster Management Authority has issued a high-alert warning for Glacial Lake Outburst Floods across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan. The alert follows forecasts of persistent high temperatures until the first week of July. Authorities have been instructed to implement precautionary measures to reduce risks to lives and infrastructure.

The NDMA said rising temperatures will accelerate snow and glacier melting in northern valleys. As a result, river and stream levels are expected to remain exceptionally high. Existing glacial lakes could expand rapidly, while new lakes may also form because of increased meltwater.

The authority directed federal ministries, provincial governments, disaster management agencies, and district administrations to strengthen preparedness. Officials have been asked to monitor vulnerable glacial lakes, conduct evacuation drills, and ensure emergency shelters remain fully equipped. Rescue 1122, Fire Brigade, and Civil Defence teams have also been placed on high alert.

The NDMA instructed the National Highway Authority, Frontier Works Organisation, and Communications and Works departments to pre-position heavy machinery for road clearance. Traffic police and law enforcement agencies have been tasked with diverting vehicles away from high-risk areas. Authorities will also coordinate emergency responses if landslides or road blockages occur.

Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to monitor streams for sudden changes in water levels, unusual water colour, or grinding sounds. Tourists have been urged to avoid glacier-prone areas and stay away from unstable glacier sites. The NDMA said controlled breaching of vulnerable glacial lakes may be considered where necessary to prevent catastrophic flooding.
