The Venezuela earthquake has claimed more than 1,700 lives, five days after the devastating disaster struck the country. Officials say rescue teams are still searching through the rubble as thousands of people remain missing.
National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez said on Monday that the death toll has risen to 1,719, while 5,034 people have been injured. He added that thousands of people are still unaccounted for following the powerful earthquake.
Rescue workers continue to carry out search operations in the affected areas. On Sunday, four more survivors, including two children, were pulled alive from the debris, bringing the total number of people rescued alive to 33.
The Venezuela earthquake has prompted a large international relief effort. Hundreds of foreign aid workers and local military personnel are assisting with rescue and humanitarian operations across the affected regions.
The European Union has announced more than $5 million in emergency assistance for earthquake victims. According to UNICEF, around 1.8 million people have been affected by the disaster and require urgent humanitarian aid.
