Morocco knock Netherlands out on penalties in FIFA World Cup Round 16

Published on: June 30, 2026 10:00 AM

Morocco secured a dramatic victory over the Netherlands in a penalty shootout to book their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after an entertaining contest ended level following extra time.

The match finished 1-1 after regulation time, with both teams finding the net once before neither side could break the deadlock during the additional 30 minutes.

The Netherlands opened the scoring through Cody Gakpo, giving the Dutch an early advantage. Morocco responded with an equaliser from Diop, ensuring the match remained evenly balanced heading into extra time.

With neither side able to produce a winning goal, the contest was decided by a penalty shootout. Morocco held their nerve from the spot, defeating the Netherlands 3-2 to eliminate the Dutch from the tournament and advance to the next round.

The victory sends Morocco into the pre-quarter-finals, where they will face Canada on July 4 for a place in the quarter-finals.

The result marked the second Round of 32 match in the tournament to be decided on penalties. Earlier, Paraguay stunned Germany in another dramatic encounter that also required a shootout after the teams could not be separated during normal and extra time. Paraguay eventually secured victory in the sudden-death stage to progress.

Morocco’s disciplined defensive performance and composure during the penalty shootout proved decisive against a Netherlands side that created several chances but was unable to convert them into a winning goal.

The Moroccan players celebrated their hard-fought victory with supporters after the final penalty, while the Dutch squad exited the competition despite a determined display.

The win continues Morocco’s impressive campaign and keeps alive hopes of another deep run in the FIFA World Cup. They will now turn their attention to a challenging knockout clash against Canada as they aim to secure a place in the last eight of the tournament.

The Round of 32 has already produced several closely contested fixtures, highlighting the increasingly competitive nature of this year’s World Cup.
