Captain Mohamed Salah led the team despite carrying a hamstring injury sustained during the group stage, playing the full match and calmly converting his penalty in the shootout. Hossam Abdelmaguid scored the decisive spot-kick after Australia failed to convert two of their four attempts, sealing a memorable night for the Pharaohs.
Egypt took an early lead in the 13th minute when Emam Ashour headed home from close range. Australia responded in the 55th minute through an own goal by Egypt defender Mohamed Hany, whose attempted clearance found the back of his own net. The goal forced extra time after both sides were unable to find a winner in normal play.
The match remained tightly contested throughout extra time, with both goalkeepers making important saves. Australia introduced experienced goalkeeper Mathew Ryan shortly before the penalty shootout, but he was unable to stop any of Egypt’s four successful spot-kicks.
Australia’s Harry Souttar missed the opening penalty, while Lucas Herrington struck the crossbar with the team’s fourth attempt, handing Egypt the advantage before Abdelmaguid converted the winning penalty.
The result represents another milestone for Egyptian football, which had never previously won a World Cup knockout match. Head coach Hossam Hassan praised his players’ composure under pressure and dedicated the victory to Egyptian supporters.
