England edge Mexico to reach World Cup quarter-finals

Published on: July 6, 2026 6:30 PM

England booked their place in the World Cup quarter-finals after defeating co-hosts Mexico 3-2 in a dramatic last-16 clash at the Azteca Stadium. Two goals from Jude Bellingham and a penalty from captain Harry Kane helped England overcome one of the tournament’s toughest challenges despite finishing the match with 10 players.

England produced a determined display in difficult conditions, battling high altitude, an intimidating home crowd and relentless pressure from Mexico. After being reduced to 10 men, the team defended with remarkable discipline as Mexico launched repeated attacks, while goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made several outstanding saves to preserve the narrow lead.

Bellingham delivered an outstanding all-round performance by scoring twice and producing a crucial goal-line clearance late in the first half. Meanwhile, Kane remained calm from the penalty spot, while Declan Rice managed to avoid a second booking despite playing much of the game under disciplinary pressure. Substitute Dan Burn also made important defensive contributions during the closing stages.

The victory carried extra significance because Mexico had entered the knockout stage after winning all four previous matches without conceding a goal. Furthermore, England became the first team to defeat Mexico in a World Cup match at the Azteca Stadium, a venue where the hosts had lost only two of 89 senior competitive international games since opening in 1966.

After the final whistle, England manager Thomas Tuchel praised his players for their resilience and belief under intense pressure, calling it another important step in their World Cup journey. England will now face Norway in the quarter-finals in Miami, hoping to build on a victory that could prove decisive in their pursuit of the world title.
