Emmy Rossum explains true reason behind Shameless exit

Published on: July 9, 2026 8:38 PM

Actress Emmy Rossum has clarified the real reason she left the hit television series Shameless, saying many fans misunderstood her decision. Speaking during a recent podcast interview, she explained that she never lost her passion for playing Fiona Gallagher and did not leave because she wanted to start a family.

Rossum said she genuinely loved working on the series and had no desire to walk away from the role itself. However, after appearing in around 110 episodes, she felt she had reached a point where she wanted to explore new creative opportunities. Consequently, she decided it was the right time to begin the next stage of her career.

The actress revealed that she had already established her own production company before leaving the show and had secured approval for her first television project, Angelyne. She explained that accepting two additional seasons of Shameless would have forced her to delay or abandon a project she had spent years developing.

Rossum also rejected the long-standing belief that she left the series to have children, describing that assumption as completely untrue. Instead, she said John Wells, the show’s creator, encouraged her to take greater control of her career by producing and developing her own television projects. His support gave her the confidence to pursue new professional goals.

Although Rossum admitted leaving the cast was emotionally difficult, she said she also felt excited about embracing new challenges and expanding her career beyond acting. Looking back, she believes the decision allowed her to grow creatively while opening opportunities that would not have been possible if she had remained with the long-running series.
