The match began with both teams showing caution, as neither side was willing to take early risks. The opening half was physical and closely contested, with frequent fouls disrupting the flow of play. Argentina gradually grew into the game before halftime, creating more pressure through controlled possession and attacking moves.

England had limited clear chances in the first half, although John Stones came close with a header after the half-hour mark. Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez also tested England’s defence with a powerful attempt, while Djed Spence impressed with his attacking runs from the flank.

The second half brought more intensity, with England taking the lead in the 55th minute. Declan Rice played Morgan Rogers through on the right side, and his low cross found Anthony Gordon, who moved ahead of the Argentine defenders to finish confidently and give the Three Lions the advantage.

Argentina responded strongly and pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Their efforts finally paid off in the 85th minute when Enzo Fernandez collected a short corner, created space and fired a low shot through a crowded penalty area past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

With extra time appearing likely, Argentina delivered a decisive blow in stoppage time. Lionel Messi won possession and produced a brilliant cross into the box, allowing substitute Lautaro Martinez to score a powerful header in the 90+2nd minute.

The victory sends defending champions Argentina into the World Cup final, where they will face Spain in a highly anticipated showdown. England, meanwhile, will compete against France in the third-place playoff.

Argentina’s resilience and late attacking quality proved decisive, while England were left heartbroken after coming within minutes of reaching their first World Cup final since 1966.
