NEET protests intensify as clashes erupt near Indian Parliament

Protests demanding the resignation of India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan intensified in New Delhi after thousands of demonstrators gathered near Parliament over the alleged NEET examination paper leak scandal, leading to clashes with security forces.

The demonstration, organised by the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), drew large crowds calling for accountability over alleged irregularities in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), one of India’s largest medical entrance examinations. Protesters accused the government of failing to protect the integrity of the country’s education system and demanded the minister’s resignation.

As demonstrators attempted to march towards Parliament, police moved to stop the procession. Authorities used tear gas and baton charges after tensions escalated, while police claimed some protesters tried to breach security barricades and threw stones at security personnel. Several police officers were reportedly injured during the confrontation.

Videos circulating on social media showed some protesters raising aggressive slogans, including threats directed at Parliament. These remarks quickly gained attention online and sparked political debate, although they did not represent the stated demands of the wider protest movement.

The unrest comes amid continued public anger over the alleged NEET paper leak scandal, which surfaced earlier this year and affected more than two million students. The controversy forced authorities to conduct a re-examination for many candidates and intensified concerns about fairness, transparency, and corruption in India’s competitive examination system.

Opposition figures and student groups have continued to pressure the government for greater accountability, while protesters insist that reforms are needed to restore confidence in the country’s examination process.

The Indian government has defended its handling of the issue, maintaining that investigations are underway and appropriate legal action is being taken against those responsible for the alleged leaks.

The latest demonstrations highlight growing frustration among students and young people over examination irregularities, with observers warning that the issue could remain a significant political challenge if concerns about transparency and accountability are not effectively addressed.
