An accountability court in Lahore, on Saturday, sat on its verdict on exemption applications filed on behalf of the Opposition Leader in Punjab Assembly, Hamza Shahbaz, and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shahbaz Sharif. The two leaders sought immunity from their personal appearances in the hearing of Ramzan Sugar Mills and Ashiana Iqbal Housing Scheme cases.
According to the applications, Shahbaz was abroad at the moment while Hamza had been feeling unwell. Therefore, both the accused were said to be unable to appear for the hearing.
As the hearing went underway, the court asked the defence counsel, Amjad Pervez, whether he was sure about Shahbaz’s return to the country after four weeks.
He responded in positive yet mentioned that doctors had recommended Shahbaz to prolong his stay for further medical treatment.
He added, “He himself wants to appear in the hearings, and his medical record has been presented in the court.”
Hamza’s lawyer, Atta Tarar, also submitted an exemption plea on behalf of his client and told the court that he was feeling unwell today and could not appear before the court.
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecutor noted that the accused were again absent from the hearing without prior notice and permission. The court adjourned the hearing till May 25.
All accused persons had already been indicted by the court in Ramzan Sugar Mills case.
Earlier on Wednesday, Lahore High Court (LHC) granted an extension in Hamza’s interim bail in three different cases, Ramzan Sugar Mills, Saaf Pani Company and assets beyond known sources of income, till May 22.
