PDMA issues red alert as scorching heatwave grips Punjab

Published on: May 18, 2025 6:22 PM

Citizens urged to stay indoors and follow safety guidelines amid rising temperatures

LAHORE – The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a red alert as a severe heatwave continues to intensify across major cities and plains of Punjab. Temperatures are expected to peak unusually high by May 19, raising health and safety concerns.

A PDMA spokesperson, while speaking to media, advised residents and tourists, especially those planning trips to Murree, to stay informed through weather updates. They urged people to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors during extreme weather conditions.

Additionally, the PDMA has instructed commissioners and deputy commissioners across Punjab to remain on high alert. Although the heatwave is dominating most areas, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast some relief in the form of evening or nighttime thundershowers in Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The heatwave is expected to impact not just Punjab, but also regions in Sindh, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However, gusty winds and rainfall in certain areas may provide short-term relief from the heat during the evening and night.

Health officials are especially concerned for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and people with medical conditions. They are advising citizens to drink plenty of fluids, avoid direct sunlight, and wear lightweight, breathable clothing to prevent heat-related illnesses.

As temperatures continue to rise, officials strongly recommend taking cool showers, staying in shaded or air-conditioned areas during the hottest parts of the day, and covering the head while stepping outdoors.
