The Sindh government has increased its law and order budget to Rs179.7 billion for the 2025-26 fiscal year. This marks a 4.5% rise from last year’s Rs172 billion. A large portion, Rs117 billion, is set aside for the police. The move reflects the government’s push to improve safety, especially in crime-hit areas like Karachi.
The prisons department will also get more funds. The budget for jails has been raised to Rs9.92 billion, up from Rs8.21 billion. This comes after a major jailbreak in Malir, where over 200 inmates escaped. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said the government is committed to strengthening law enforcement and public safety.
The budget also includes Rs200 million for a new Provincial Intelligence Fusion & Threat Assessment Centre. This center will help gather and share intelligence among agencies. An additional Rs400 million is allocated for bulletproof vehicles to protect foreign nationals, especially Chinese engineers working in Sindh.
To make highways safer, a new Sindh Police Highway Patrol unit has been launched. It will start with 1,200 officers, 71 vehicles, and cover 40 beats. Eventually, the plan is to expand it to 2,153 km of roads with 1,900 officers, 92 vehicles, and 13 armored cars.
The chief minister rejected claims of rising crime in Karachi. He shared data showing that street robberies fell by 54% and vehicle thefts by 67%. He praised the police for improving detection rates to 81% and noted 210 terrorists were arrested in 2024. He also confirmed that no major terror attack occurred in Sindh, except one in October near Karachi airport.
