The FBI has added Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghadam, to its Most Wanted list due to his alleged role in the 2007 disappearance of retired FBI agent Robert Levinson. Levinson vanished after landing on Iran’s Kish Island in March 2007. Moghadam, who once led Iran’s intelligence operations in Europe, is accused of managing the kidnapping and helping hide Iran’s involvement. The FBI released new posters on Tuesday, asking the public for information on three Iranian intelligence officers.
Moghadam, also known as Ahmad Amirinia, currently serves as Tehran’s top diplomat in Islamabad. However, his past ties to Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) have brought him under scrutiny again. The FBI claims he oversaw the operation that abducted Levinson and was involved in the efforts to cover it up. While serving as an ambassador in Pakistan, his alleged past role has tied this global case to Islamabad.
In addition to Moghadam, the FBI has also named two other senior Iranian officials. Taghi Daneshvar, a counterintelligence officer, and Mohammad Baseri, his associate, are both suspected of aiding in the abduction. Furthermore, Gholamhossein Mohammadnia, a senior MOIS deputy and former ambassador to Albania, was also added to the list. He was expelled from Albania in 2018 for allegedly threatening national security.
Although Iran has long denied holding Levinson, evidence including photos and a video emerged in 2010 and 2011, showing him in captivity. Unfortunately, there have been no confirmed sightings since then, and U.S. officials believe he died while being held. Still, the FBI’s investigation remains active, aiming to hold those responsible accountable.
Despite Moghadam’s current diplomatic status, his connection to the operation has sparked new concerns. While no Pakistani involvement has been found, his presence in Islamabad adds a complex layer to the case. The U.S. Treasury had already sanctioned him earlier this year, along with others linked to Levinson’s disappearance.
