Iran courthouse assault kills 5, injures 13

Published on: July 26, 2025 5:25 PM

An armed attack targeted a courthouse in Zahedan, Iran’s southeastern Sistan province, killing at least five people. The attackers threw a hand grenade inside the building, causing chaos and casualties. Among the victims were a mother and her child, according to Iranian media reports. The attack also injured 13 others, including judiciary staff and security personnel. The incident shocked the local community and raised concerns about ongoing violence in the region.

Following the attack, security forces engaged the assailants in fierce clashes. Authorities confirmed that all three attackers were killed during the confrontations. The Iranian police swiftly secured the courthouse and the surrounding area to prevent further harm.

A senior police official provided details of the encounter to the state news agency IRNA. Meanwhile, Jaish al-Adl, a militant group, claimed responsibility for the attack through a statement on their Telegram channel.

Jaish al-Adl urged civilians to evacuate the area immediately for their safety. The group has been involved in multiple attacks in the region, aiming to challenge the government. Sistan frequently experiences clashes between security forces and various armed groups.

These groups often demand more autonomy and rights for the local population. However, the Iranian government accuses some militants of having foreign links and involvement in illegal activities like smuggling.

Human rights organizations and eyewitnesses reported that several judiciary employees and security officers were among the wounded. The attack targeted judges’ chambers, indicating a direct assault on Iran’s judicial system.

This violent incident adds to the ongoing instability in southeastern Iran. It highlights the challenges the government faces in maintaining peace in a region marked by frequent unrest. The authorities have promised to intensify efforts to secure the province and protect civilians.

In response to the attack, Iran continues to blame foreign powers for fueling unrest in its border areas. Meanwhile, talks related to Iran’s nuclear deal face new hurdles amid regional tensions. The government vows to fight terrorism and maintain order despite the threats.

Local and international observers closely watch the evolving security situation. The recent courthouse attack is a grim reminder of the fragile peace in Iran’s volatile southeast.
