Taliban rejects US return to Bagram airbase

Published on: October 6, 2025 8:47 PM

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid has said Afghanistan will never hand over Bagram Airbase to the United States under any circumstances. In an interview with Sky News, he firmly rejected any plans to allow U.S. forces back on Afghan soil. “Afghans will not give their land to anyone,” he stated, emphasizing national sovereignty.

His comments come amid rising tension following U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks threatening “serious consequences” if Afghanistan does not return control of Bagram. Trump had recently said he intends to reclaim the airbase and military equipment left behind during the U.S. withdrawal in 2021. The Taliban has responded with strong opposition.

Zabihullah also confirmed that talks have taken place between Kabul and Washington about reopening embassies in both capitals. However, he clarified that this does not include any agreement on military cooperation or base control. He added that several countries, apart from Russia, have informally recognized the Taliban government but are yet to do so officially.

On the topic of girls’ education, Zabihullah avoided making any clear promises. He said the issue remains unresolved and stopped short of committing to reforms. This continues to be a major concern for the international community, which has made recognition of the Taliban government conditional on human rights progress.

Bagram Airbase was a major U.S. military hub during the 20-year war in Afghanistan. It was officially handed over to Afghan authorities in 2021 during the final phase of U.S. troop withdrawal. The Taliban now considers full control of Afghan territory a matter of national pride and insists it will not compromise, even under external pressure.
