Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the Reko Diq mining project will become a symbol of development and stronger Pakistan–Canada cooperation. The Prime Minister made these remarks during a meeting with Canada’s new High Commissioner, Ambassador Tarik Ali Khan, in Islamabad on Wednesday.
The Prime Minister said Reko Diq’s development would open new doors for investment, jobs, and regional progress. The project, located in Balochistan, is one of the world’s largest undeveloped copper and gold reserves. It is a joint venture between Barrick Gold and Pakistani stakeholders, with production expected to start by 2028. Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that such partnerships reflect Pakistan’s commitment to creating a business-friendly environment.

Welcoming the new High Commissioner, Shehbaz Sharif congratulated him on his appointment. He expressed confidence that Tarik Ali’s tenure will further strengthen bilateral relations. The Prime Minister also highlighted mines and minerals as a key area of mutual interest. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s desire to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors including energy, trade, and technology.
The Prime Minister also conveyed his greetings to the Canadian leadership, expressing hope for closer collaboration in the coming years. He appreciated the Pakistani diaspora in Canada, calling it a “vital bridge” between the two countries. The diaspora, he said, continues to promote goodwill and understanding through cultural and professional exchange.
