Army Chief now Chief of Defence forces, term extended to five years

Published on: November 13, 2025 7:21 PM

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly approved the Army Act 2025 following the 27th constitutional amendment. The bill allows the Army Chief to also serve as the Chief of Defence Forces. The new notification will reset the Army Chief’s term, making it a five-year tenure.

Under the amended Army Act, the position of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee has been abolished. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said the Army Chief will now hold dual responsibilities. He added that the new notification will formalize the extended term and authority.

The amendment comes after the National Assembly passed the 27th constitutional amendment. This change consolidates military leadership and clarifies the hierarchy within the armed forces. It also affects the structure of military notifications and appointments.

Experts say the bill centralizes command and ensures continuity of leadership in Pakistan’s military. Critics, however, have expressed concerns over concentration of authority. Supporters argue it strengthens defence preparedness and coordination across forces.

The Army Act 2025 will now go through remaining procedural steps before implementation. The government expects the changes to take effect immediately after formal notifications. Observers say it marks a significant shift in Pakistan’s military and constitutional framework.
