Israel demolishes 25 buildings in West Bank

Published on: December 31, 2025 11:45 PM

Nur Shams: Israeli forces began demolishing 25 residential buildings in the Nur Shams refugee camp on Wednesday. The military said the operation targeted armed Palestinian groups. Around 100 families were affected, and residents watched helplessly as bulldozers tore through their homes.

The Israeli military stated the demolitions were necessary due to “ongoing counterterrorism activity” in northern Samaria. Major General Avi Bluth, commander of the Central Command, ordered the demolition citing operational needs. The area has long been a hub for clashes between Palestinian factions and Israeli forces.

AFP journalists reported thick dust clouds rising as cranes and bulldozers destroyed homes. Many residents retrieved belongings before demolition. The military said camps like Nur Shams house explosives and weapons used by armed groups, posing threats to soldiers.

This action forms part of a broader strategy to secure military access in densely built refugee camps. Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967. Refugee camps like Nur Shams were established after 1948, housing displaced Palestinians and growing into densely populated neighborhoods.

Residents believe the demolitions aim to weaken the camps’ identity and gradually absorb them into nearby city structures. The demolition raises fears over long-term displacement and the future of Palestinian refugee communities in the West Bank.
