OGRA cuts LNG import prices for January

Published on: January 17, 2026 3:22 PM

ISLAMABAD: The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has announced a reduction in imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices for January, issuing a fresh notification that provides limited relief to consumers and industries dependent on the fuel.

According to the notification, imported LNG prices for January have been lowered by up to 5.26 percent. For the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) network, rates were cut by $0.55 per MMBtu, bringing the revised price down to $11.27 per MMBtu.

Similarly, rates for the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) system were reduced by $0.56 per MMBtu, with the revised price now standing at $10.21 per MMBtu. Officials said the latest adjustments stem from a combination of lower international LNG prices and contractual pricing formulas tied to global benchmarks.

Energy analysts noted that while the decline is modest, it could help lower costs for sectors reliant on imported LNG, particularly power generation and manufacturing units. However, the extent of relief for general consumers may depend on how distribution companies adjust downstream gas tariffs in the coming months.

Pakistan has continued to recalibrate its energy import mix amid sustained volatility in global fuel markets and currency fluctuations. LNG currently constitutes a sizable portion of the country’s fuel needs, particularly during periods of peak demand.

The latest downward revision also aligns with broader trends recorded in FY2025-26, when Pakistan’s LNG imports dropped significantly. During July–August 2025-26, LNG imports fell 28.81 percent year-on-year to $507.6 million, contributing to an overall 4.65 percent decline in the petroleum import bill during the same period.

OGRA issues monthly LNG price notifications based on international market movements and contract obligations, while policymakers continue efforts to manage energy costs and secure reliable supply.
