The federal government has imposed an immediate nationwide ban on all commercial and private drone operations following escalating tensions and recent border clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan, officials confirmed on Friday.

The Ministry of Interior issued a formal notification prohibiting the outdoor use of drones, including quadcopters and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), citing serious security concerns. The move comes after intensified cross-border hostilities and fears that drones could be used for surveillance or remote attacks targeting sensitive installations.

Authorities said the decision was taken in response to the prevailing security situation, particularly after recent military confrontations along the Pakistan-Afghan border. Officials emphasised that unrestricted drone use could pose risks to public safety, government infrastructure, and national security.
In parallel, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government announced a 30-day ban on outdoor drone flying across the province. The provincial Home and Tribal Affairs Department warned that militant groups had resorted to using UAVs and quadcopters to target government buildings and installations, especially in southern districts. The advisory also urged citizens to avoid unnecessary outdoor gatherings near sensitive locations and instructed government departments to enhance security arrangements.
However, certain exemptions have been granted. Indoor drone use for private events, such as coverage inside halls or marquees, will remain permitted. Additionally, intelligence and law enforcement agencies will continue to use drones for official operations.
A similar restriction had already been imposed in Punjab earlier this week due to security concerns. Officials said the nationwide measure aims to ensure public safety and prevent any misuse of drone technology during the current period of heightened tensions.

The government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding citizens and maintaining public order, stressing that the ban would remain in place until the security situation stabilises. Authorities also urged the public to fully cooperate with the restrictions in the interest of national security.
