Pakistan invites Swedish firms to expand mining

Published on: March 6, 2026 11:49 PM

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has invited Swedish companies to explore investment opportunities in its mining sector beyond the Reko Diq project ahead of the Pakistan Minerals Investment Forum (PMIF) 2026. The forum, scheduled for April 8–9 in Islamabad, aims to attract global expertise and capital to develop Pakistan’s untapped mineral resources. Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik met Swedish Ambassador Alexandra Berg von Linde to discuss ongoing cooperation and new avenues in mining and energy sectors.

Both sides highlighted the long-standing 77-year relationship between Pakistan and Sweden, emphasizing economic and industrial collaboration. Ambassador Berg von Linde noted that over 40 Swedish companies operate in Pakistan, with mining identified as a promising sector for future investment. She stressed Sweden’s expertise in sustainability, digitalisation, mining services, and environmental protection as a potential contribution to Pakistan’s resource development.

Swedish companies are already contributing to the landmark Reko Diq Project, providing products, services, connectivity solutions, and explosives. Malik praised their professionalism, stating the project had not faced a single day of delay, and described Reko Diq as “the jewel of Pakistan’s mining sector.” He reiterated that the government seeks to expand mining activities and showcase allied sector opportunities at PMIF 2026.

The ambassador recalled Sweden’s participation in the previous forum edition, including an official stall and independent exhibitions by five companies. She expressed optimism for greater Swedish involvement in 2026, including representatives from the Business Development Association. Malik said the upcoming forum is expected to be larger and more impactful than before, highlighting untapped potential in exploration and allied sectors.
