PTI warns of major movement if Imran Khan health concerns ignored

Published on: March 14, 2026 2:20 PM

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders on Saturday warned that they would not tolerate any negligence regarding the health of their jailed founder and former prime minister, Imran Khan, and said the party is prepared to launch a major movement for his release, The News reported.

During a news conference at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa House, party leaders expressed deep concern over the “deteriorating health” of Khan and demanded his immediate transfer to Shifa International Hospital for specialised treatment. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi described the government’s handling of the matter as “irresponsible and illegal,” emphasising that Khan, as a former prime minister, has a legal and moral right to proper medical care.

Afridi criticised the federal government for denying access to Khan’s personal doctors and family members, calling it a blatant violation of human rights. “Such behaviour will not be tolerated,” he said, adding that while PTI temporarily slowed political activities during Ramadan, the party’s preparations for action remain intact.

PTI Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter president Junaid Akbar highlighted a broader political crackdown, including the disqualification of PTI senators and restrictions on party workers, warning that continued mistreatment of their leader could fuel tensions beyond government control.

Senior leader Babar Awan described the secrecy surrounding Khan’s condition as criminal and warned that anyone responsible for harm would face consequences. Former KP finance minister Taimur Jhagra stressed that medical treatment is a fundamental right and urged the government to de-escalate the situation.

Shahid Khattak, a PTI lawmaker, appealed to the judiciary to expedite pending cases and order Khan’s immediate transfer to Shifa International Hospital. The party reiterated that its struggle remains peaceful and constitutional but warned that further delays in ensuring the former premier’s medical care could trigger widespread political action.
