Shehbaz, EU Council president discuss Middle East

Islamabad, March 30, 2026: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif received a phone call from European Council President António Costa, during which both leaders discussed rising tensions in the Middle East and bilateral relations.

They expressed serious concern over the situation in Iran and the Gulf, highlighting its potential impact on the global economy and emphasizing the need for dialogue and diplomacy.

During the conversation, Prime Minister Sharif briefed Costa on Pakistan’s mediation efforts to ease regional tensions, stressing that Pakistan values its relationship with the European Union. He also highlighted the upcoming first Pakistan-EU Business Forum scheduled for April 28–29, 2026, in Islamabad and expressed anticipation for its successful inauguration.

President Costa commended Pakistan’s peace efforts and reiterated the European Union’s commitment to supporting all diplomatic measures aimed at restoring stability in the region. He also expressed eagerness to welcome Prime Minister Sharif during his planned visit to Brussels on previously agreed dates.

Sharif conveyed his best wishes to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and emphasized the strategic importance of the GSP Plus trade facility for Pakistan. Both leaders reaffirmed the mutual desire to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties between Pakistan and the EU.

The call reflects continued engagement between Islamabad and Brussels, underscoring Pakistan’s active role in regional peace initiatives while promoting stronger EU-Pakistan cooperation across political and economic fronts.
