Growing with Misinformation, Disinformation and Deepfakes in the Digital Age

Published on: May 12, 2026 2:15 PM

GUJRAT: Concerns over the growing dangers of misinformation, disinformation, and deepfakes in today’s digital world were highlighted during a farewell ceremony held in honor of retiring senior faculty member Dr. Zafar Iqbal at University of Gujrat’s Hafiz Hayat Campus.

The ceremony was chaired by Registrar Muhammad Naeem Butt and attended by faculty members, students, and senior university officials. Guests of honor included Prof. Dr. Adil Rashid, Dr. Muhammad Yousaf, Dr. Sher Zaman, and others, while the event was hosted by Prof. Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Muhammad Yousaf delivered a detailed lecture on the impact of misinformation and deepfakes on society. He stated that technology in the modern era has become a double-edged sword whose benefits and harms depend upon its usage. He observed that the rapid expansion of social media has transformed communication and advertising, but at the same time has intensified the spread of fake news and manipulated content.

He emphasized that media literacy, critical thinking, and understanding context are essential tools to counter misinformation and disinformation. According to him, societies around the world are facing serious challenges due to the increasing circulation of misleading information, making public awareness more important than ever.

Registrar Muhammad Naeem Butt praised the role of teachers in shaping society and building enlightened future generations. Prof. Dr. Adil Rashid also stressed the need to equip youth with awareness and analytical skills to deal with the challenges of the digital age.

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of a commemorative shield to Dr. Zafar Iqbal in recognition of his outstanding academic and teaching services. Members of the Hayatian Mathematical Society also presented a poetic tribute in his honor.
