Fuel shortage disrupts judiciary security in Karachi

Published on: May 19, 2026 4:45 PM

A severe fuel shortage has disrupted police security operations for the judiciary in Karachi, after Pakistan State Oil (PSO) suspended fuel supply to Security Unit One over unpaid dues, raising concerns about the safety of courts and judicial personnel.

According to official sources, the fuel allocated budget for Security Unit One has been fully exhausted, leading to a complete halt in fuel provision for official vehicles assigned to protect key judicial institutions, including the Supreme Court of Pakistan, the Sindh High Court, and subordinate courts in Karachi.

The affected unit is responsible for security duties at multiple high-security locations across the city, and the suspension has reportedly impacted routine patrolling and escort services for judicial officers.

Officials confirmed that PSO stopped fuel supply after dues accumulated to more than Rs37.7 million. The suspension began in early May, following earlier partial reductions in supply.

The Senior Superintendent of Police heading Security Unit One has formally informed provincial authorities about the worsening situation and requested urgent financial support to restore operations.

In response, the registrar of the Sindh High Court has reportedly contacted multiple government departments, urging immediate intervention to prevent any lapse in security arrangements.

Authorities have warned that prolonged disruption in fuel supply could expose courts, judges, lawyers, and court staff to significant security risks, particularly during ongoing hearings and transfers of high-risk detainees.

An emergency summary seeking additional funds was forwarded to the Sindh Home Department, which subsequently sent the request to Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah for approval.

Sources indicate that while partial funds were released earlier, the remaining demand has yet to be cleared, despite repeated requests from police officials.

The fuel crisis reportedly began on April 10 and escalated until supply was fully suspended on May 3, severely affecting operational capacity.

Authorities are now awaiting a final decision from the provincial government to restore fuel supply and ensure uninterrupted security for Karachi’s judicial system.
