Prince Edward urges youth to value real world experience

Published on: May 25, 2026 3:51 PM

Prince Edward delivered an important message about education and personal growth while attending the Education World Forum in London ahead of his upcoming overseas mission on behalf of King Charles III. During the high-profile gathering, the Duke encouraged young people and education leaders to recognise the growing importance of real-world experiences alongside formal academic qualifications in today’s rapidly changing professional environment.

Speaking at a discussion titled “Empowering Learners Through Non-Formal Education,” Prince Edward stressed that practical experience often plays a greater role in shaping future success than examination results alone. He explained that academic qualifications may help candidates secure interviews, yet employers frequently focus more on personality, passion and practical understanding during important recruitment conversations. His remarks quickly attracted attention among educators and policymakers attending the international event in London.

Furthermore, the Duke highlighted how learning through direct experiences allows young people to better understand themselves, discover their strengths and identify meaningful goals in life. He explained that stepping beyond classrooms and engaging with the wider world helps individuals develop confidence, purpose and valuable life skills that cannot always be gained through traditional educational systems alone. His speech strongly supported broader educational approaches that combine academic learning with practical development opportunities.

Meanwhile, discussions at the Education World Forum focused heavily on preparing young people for future global challenges through modern support systems, flexible learning opportunities and practical skill development. Policymakers and education experts explored ways to equip students with tools necessary for success in an increasingly competitive and fast-changing world economy. Prince Edward’s comments reinforced growing international interest in balancing formal education with experience-based learning models.

The Duke’s address came shortly before Buckingham Palace officially announced that he and Sophie will begin a three-day official visit to Portugal starting on June 1. The overseas trip will form part of the royal family’s wider diplomatic engagements under King Charles’ reign and is expected to strengthen relations between Britain and Portugal through cultural and official meetings.

In recent years, Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie have taken on increasingly important royal responsibilities as senior working members of the monarchy. Their growing international presence reflects King Charles’ continued efforts to modernise royal duties while maintaining strong diplomatic and charitable connections abroad. The latest announcement further highlights the couple’s expanding role within the British royal family during an important period of transition for the monarchy.
