A major political development has emerged following the Gilgit-Baltistan elections, as the Gilgit-Baltistan government formation process moved forward with an agreement between Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). Both parties have agreed that the single largest party should be given the opportunity to form the government.
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar contacted PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and congratulated him on his party’s performance in the Gilgit-Baltistan elections. During the conversation, the two leaders agreed that the party with the highest number of seats should lead the next government.
The leaders also agreed to hold further discussions on matters related to Gilgit-Baltistan and to coordinate on future political arrangements. The understanding is expected to play a key role in shaping the region’s next administration.
Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated President Asif Ali Zardari on the election results. According to sources, the prime minister remarked that Bilawal Bhutto had run a stronger election campaign, to which President Zardari responded with a light-hearted comment about his son.
According to preliminary and unofficial election results, PPP secured 10 seats, making it the largest party in the assembly. Independent candidates won 7 seats, while PML-N secured 6 seats. With 13 seats required for a majority in the 24-member house, the Gilgit-Baltistan government formation process is expected to continue through consultations and political alliances.
