The Punjab government has revised business operating hours across Punjab as part of its austerity campaign, extending closing times for select businesses while maintaining restrictions on markets and commercial hubs. Authorities issued a formal notification directing immediate implementation across the province to manage energy consumption more efficiently. The revised plan aims to balance economic activity with energy-saving measures during peak usage hours. Officials stated that the move is designed to ensure smoother regulation of business operations while reducing pressure on power demand.
Under the new schedule, grocery stores and general provision shops will now be allowed to operate until 10pm, giving them an additional hour of business activity compared to earlier timings. Meanwhile, shopping malls, bazaars, and major markets will be required to shut down strictly by 9pm under the revised policy. Authorities said the change supports energy conservation goals while maintaining essential retail access for the public. The government emphasized that enforcement teams will ensure compliance across urban and rural commercial areas.
In addition, restaurants, cafes, cinemas, and other food outlets have been permitted to remain open until 11pm, allowing extended evening services for customers. However, takeaway and home delivery services have been exempted from timing restrictions and can continue operations beyond closing hours. Fruit and vegetable shops have also been granted permission to operate until 11pm to support daily household needs. Officials said these adjustments aim to balance public convenience with controlled energy usage across sectors.
Essential services have been fully exempted from the new restrictions, ensuring uninterrupted access to healthcare and basic facilities across the province. Hospitals, clinics, medical stores, and laboratories will continue normal operations without any time limitations under the revised framework. Similarly, petrol pumps, CNG stations, and electric vehicle charging points will remain open round the clock to support transport needs. Bakeries, tandoors, dairy shops, and milk outlets have also been excluded from the closure schedule.
Furthermore, gyms, sports facilities, paddle courts, IT companies, and call centres will continue operations without any impact from the new business-hour regulations. The chief secretary has instructed all departments and local administrations to enforce the notification immediately and ensure uniform implementation across all districts. Officials stated that the policy forms part of a broader strategy to manage electricity consumption while maintaining economic activity. The government stressed that compliance will be closely monitored to ensure effective execution of the austerity measures.
