Shakira, Burna Boy Perform at 2026 FIFA World Cup Opening Ceremony

The FIFA World Cup 2026 officially began with a colourful and star-studded opening ceremony in Mexico, where global music icon Shakira headlined a high-energy performance that set the tone for football’s biggest tournament.

The Colombian singer electrified the crowd at the historic Azteca Stadium with a dynamic performance of the official tournament anthem “Dai Dai,” joined on stage by Nigerian artist Burna Boy. Their performance, accompanied by fireworks, dancers and a packed stadium, marked a festive start to the global sporting event.

The opening ceremony also featured performances by several international and regional artists, including Mexican singers Lila Downs and Belinda, rock band Maná, and Colombian stars J Balvin and Ryan Castro. Opera singer Andrea Bocelli and K-pop artist Ejae also performed the official World Cup anthem “DNA,” which was released ahead of the tournament.

Hollywood actress and FIFA ambassador Salma Hayek officially declared the tournament open, welcoming teams from all 48 participating nations during a parade of flags that followed the performances. The ceremony showcased a blend of music, culture and sport, reflecting the global spirit of the World Cup.

Local Mexican singer Alejandro Fernández led the crowd in the national anthem, while thousands of fans joined in the emotional moment inside the stadium. South African singer Tyla also performed her country’s anthem ahead of the opening match.

On the field, hosts Mexico delivered a strong start to their campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over South Africa, who finished the match with nine players after disciplinary setbacks. The result gave Mexico an early boost as they aim to progress deep into the tournament.

The opening night combined entertainment and sport in grand style, officially ushering in a month-long global football celebration expected to captivate audiences around the world.
