India sees progress in US trade talks

Published on: June 24, 2026 11:00 PM

India has welcomed recent trade discussions with the United States as an important step toward a bilateral agreement, though both sides have yet to finalise a deal. The talks are significant for strengthening economic ties between two major trading partners and could influence tariffs, market access and investment flows. Officials said negotiations remain active despite unresolved differences.

Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal described the two-day discussions with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer as constructive and forward-looking. The meetings focused on advancing negotiations that began earlier this year after both countries agreed in principle to reduce certain trade barriers. New Delhi said the latest round marked a key milestone in ongoing efforts to reach an interim arrangement.

Negotiations have faced challenges following legal and policy developments in the United States. Progress slowed after the US Supreme Court limited parts of President Donald Trump’s broader tariff framework. Additional complications emerged when Washington launched investigations into alleged unfair trade practices involving several countries, including India.

Despite these hurdles, officials on both sides have expressed confidence about reaching an agreement. Goyal recently stated that nearly all elements of the first phase of the deal had been completed. Meanwhile, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said negotiators were working through the remaining issues needed to finalise the framework.

One major concern for India is maintaining tariff competitiveness against other manufacturing economies in the region. Indian officials have also proposed including a review mechanism that would allow both countries to revisit and adjust the agreement after a specified period. Discussions are expected to continue as negotiators work toward resolving the outstanding issues and securing a mutually beneficial trade pact.
