Release Date and Pricing
Rockstar Games is preparing for one of the biggest entertainment launches in history as Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to release on November 19. Pre-orders officially opened on June 25, while players who purchase the game early will be able to pre-load it from November 12. After facing two delays from its original schedule, Rockstar said the additional development time was necessary to deliver the polished experience that fans expect from the franchise.
The game will launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, while Rockstar has not yet announced a release date for PC or Nintendo Switch 2. The standard edition will cost £69.99 in the UK and $79.99 in the United States, whereas the Ultimate Edition, featuring bonus vehicles and weapons, will retail for £89.99 and $99.99. Physical copies will include a digital download code instead of a game disc.
Story, Setting and Characters
GTA 6 introduces Lucia as the series’ first playable female protagonist in a modern 3D title, alongside her partner Jason, who also serves as a playable character. The story follows the duo after a robbery goes wrong, leading them into a dangerous criminal journey inspired by the famous Bonnie and Clyde partnership. Rockstar has set the adventure in Leonida, a fictional version of Florida, with the iconic Vice City returning as the game’s main urban location.
The newly revealed cover art highlights the game’s vibrant setting through symbols such as alligators, flamingos and tropical scenery, reflecting the atmosphere of Leonida. Although Rockstar has not confirmed the launch of an updated online mode, industry experts expect a successor to GTA Online because of its enormous popularity. Meanwhile, it remains unclear whether future regulations affecting online gaming services could influence multiplayer features.
Years of Development Build Huge Expectations
GTA 6 has been one of the gaming industry’s longest-awaited releases, arriving more than a decade after Grand Theft Auto 5 launched in September 2013. Rockstar officially confirmed development in February 2022, although many believe work began much earlier after the release of Red Dead Redemption 2. The project has also faced challenges, including major leaks, cyberattacks and workplace controversies during its lengthy production cycle.
Industry analysts estimate GTA 6 could become the most expensive video game ever developed, with production costs reportedly exceeding one billion dollars. Grand Theft Auto 5 has already sold nearly 230 million copies worldwide, generating billions in revenue and becoming one of history’s best-selling entertainment products. Combined, the first two GTA 6 trailers have attracted around 447 million views, demonstrating extraordinary global excitement ahead of the game’s launch.
