PCB launches four-team tournament for World Cup preparations

Published on: July 9, 2026 7:52 PM

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced a four-team One-Day tournament scheduled for August as part of its preparations for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027. The competition will take place before the domestic first-class season and aims to identify a strong group of players capable of representing Pakistan on the global stage.

Director of High Performance Aaqib Javed said the national team has around 18 months before the World Cup, making this the right time to begin serious planning. He explained that the tournament will provide selectors and coaches with a competitive platform to evaluate Pakistan’s leading white-ball cricketers under match conditions.

According to Javed, the selection committee and coaching staff have jointly designed the event to feature four balanced teams made up of the country’s top white-ball players. Furthermore, they will choose each playing XI according to specific player roles, allowing management to assess combinations and identify the most effective squad for future international assignments.

Javed added that every match will be televised, ensuring performances remain visible to selectors, coaches and cricket fans across the country. As a result, the management expects to monitor every player’s progress closely while building a reliable core group for upcoming international competitions and the 2027 World Cup campaign.

The former Pakistan fast bowler also highlighted the importance of improving the national team’s position in the ICC ODI rankings before the World Cup begins. He stressed that Pakistan should rank among the world’s top four One-Day teams and said the board remains fully committed to achieving that objective through structured planning and consistent player development.
