A Southwest Airlines flight was safely diverted to Charleston International Airport after the crew detected a suspected fuel leak while the aircraft was flying over South Carolina, prompting an emergency response.

Southwest flight WN4761 was travelling from Orlando International Airport to Manchester, New Hampshire, when the Boeing 737-800 aircraft was forced to change course on July 20, 2026.
The aircraft had taken off from Orlando at 8:54 a.m. EDT and was cruising at an altitude of approximately 37,000 feet when the flight crew noticed possible signs of a fuel-related issue. The pilots immediately followed safety procedures and declared an airborne emergency.
The aircraft transmitted the “squawk 7700” emergency code, alerting air traffic controllers about the situation and allowing emergency teams to prepare for the aircraft’s arrival.
After the alert, the flight was redirected to Charleston International Airport in South Carolina. The pilots successfully landed the aircraft on Runway 15, where emergency response vehicles were positioned as a precaution.
The flight, which was carrying 137 passengers and crew members, ended in Charleston instead of its scheduled destination in Manchester. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew following the incident.
Southwest Airlines officials are expected to conduct a detailed inspection of the Boeing 737-800 aircraft to determine the cause of the suspected fuel leak. Maintenance teams will examine the aircraft’s systems and components as part of the investigation.
