The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has launched a major crackdown targeting 100,000 wealthy social media users who publicly flaunt extravagant lifestyles. Authorities are focusing on individuals showcasing luxury homes, expensive cars, high-end jewellery, and lavish weddings. The tax body warns that anyone failing to update their income tax returns accordingly will face legal consequences.
FBR officials revealed that their social media monitoring team has collected detailed data on people whose visible wealth does not match their declared income. Videos and photos of flashy bungalows, costly vehicles, and $20,000 suits worn at weddings are under strict scrutiny. The agency plans to compare tax returns from previous years to current filings to identify discrepancies.
The ongoing audits will cover nearly 80% of all tax returns this year. Those found hiding assets or income will be required to explain their financial sources. Special attention will be paid to the expenses recorded at extravagant weddings, where luxurious spending must be accurately reported in tax documents, or else penalties will follow.
FBR clarified that individuals who submit truthful and updated income tax returns will not be penalized. However, anyone concealing their lavish spending or failing to disclose increased earnings will face strict legal action. The authorities urge all citizens to promptly update their tax information to avoid trouble.
Officials emphasized that transparency and compliance are key, saying, “Nothing will be said to those who submit correct and updated income details.” The FBR’s campaign highlights the government’s intensified effort to close tax evasion loopholes exposed through social media.
