Massive anti-narcotics drive targets Balochistan drug trade

Published on: September 22, 2025 3:17 PM

A sweeping anti-narcotics campaign has been launched in Balochistan to eradicate poppy cultivation and dismantle drug trafficking networks across the province. The large-scale operation is being conducted jointly by the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) and local authorities. Acting under direct instructions from Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir and the Balochistan government, the mission seeks to make the province permanently free of narcotics. This initiative signals a strong commitment to eliminating one of the region’s most persistent and destabilising challenges.

Extensive operations have already destroyed significant poppy crops in several districts, disrupting the supply chain of illegal drugs. Authorities have also intensified crackdowns on networks engaged in the production, trafficking, and distribution of narcotics. These decisive actions aim to break the backbone of organized crime groups that profit from the drug trade. Officials believe these measures will not only reduce drug availability but also curb the associated rise in violence and criminal activities across the region.

Recognising the link between drug trafficking, terrorism, and organized crime, the government is prioritising a holistic approach to counter this threat. Alternative livelihood programs are being introduced for local communities to discourage them from returning to poppy cultivation. By offering sustainable income opportunities, the authorities hope to shift dependence away from illegal crops and foster long-term economic stability. This strategy is expected to address the root causes of the narcotics problem while building community resilience.

Furthermore, officials stress that combating the drug trade requires breaking the entrenched networks that fuel regional instability. They acknowledge that the nexus between drugs, terrorism, and criminal organizations continues to threaten national security. To dismantle this interconnected web, a lasting strategy supported by robust law enforcement and community cooperation is crucial. The campaign underscores the importance of collective action to secure Balochistan’s future and promote regional peace.

The fight against narcotics is being described as a national responsibility that extends beyond security forces. Government institutions, civil society, and citizens are being urged to participate actively in supporting this operation’s long-term goals. Authorities emphasize that sustained cooperation is essential to prevent drug networks from resurging and to protect younger generations from the harmful effects of addiction. The campaign’s success could serve as a model for similar efforts across Pakistan.
