Govt offers to shift Imran Khan to Banigala

Published on: October 23, 2025 9:59 AM

ISLAMABAD: Federal Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry on Wednesday offered to shift PTI founder Imran Khan from Adiala Jail to his Banigala residence, provided the PTI submits a written application requesting the move.

Speaking on Asma Shirazi’s talk show on Hum News, the minister said that if declared a sub-jail, Banigala would allow PTI leaders and Khan’s family to visit him daily. “We are ready to shift him if they submit an application. There, PTI leaders can meet him and play Ludo and other games day and night,” he remarked.

In comments later to Dawn, Mr Chaudhry said that the 8,000 prisoners in Adiala Jail were also suffering due to the PTI founder’s high-profile political presence. He clarified that while Imran Khan cannot be released, the government is open to relocating him to Banigala under legal provisions.

Reacting to the statement, former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser said the PTI would consider the offer if the government shows seriousness. “If Khan sahib gives the nod, we will definitely submit the written application,” he said, adding that Imran Khan had been incarcerated for over two years and was legally entitled to bail.

Mr Qaiser urged the government to show goodwill by easing restrictions on meetings with the former prime minister, saying that such steps could help improve the political climate.

It may be recalled that in January 2024, Imran Khan’s spouse Bushra Bibi was moved to Banigala, declared a sub-jail, after being sentenced to 14 years in the Toshakhana case. However, she later alleged poisoning and successfully petitioned the Islamabad High Court to be transferred back to Adiala Jail in May 2024.
