
ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court of Pakistan has achieved a historic reduction in pending cases, marking a major success in its modern, technology-based reform drive.
The initiative, focused on judicial modernization, transparency, and digital transformation to enhance efficiency within the judiciary.

In 2015, the number of pending cases stood at 25,686, which rose to 60,446 by 2024. After Justice Afridi took office and made backlog reduction his top priority under the Judicial Reform Action Plan, significant progress has been made — bringing the number of pending cases down to 56,169.
The reform program introduced digital filing systems, online case tracking, and electronic certified copies of court documents. Improved coordination between the registry and benches has further accelerated case processing.

According to the court, these data-driven measures have improved both transparency and efficiency in judicial decision-making, setting a new benchmark for institutional reform in Pakistan’s legal system.
