Domestic worker arrested in Karachi after amassing millions

Published on: October 25, 2025 2:21 PM

KARACHI – Police have arrested a domestic worker in Defence Housing Authority (DHA) after discovering that he had allegedly accumulated millions of rupees in assets, far exceeding his modest monthly salary of Rs45,000.

According to investigators, the suspect, Wajid Ali, maintained four bank accounts with total transactions amounting to Rs18.6 million. Police claimed he purchased a flat in Karachi, plots in Haripur and Islamabad, and gold worth over Rs10 million, in addition to owning a passenger van that operated on the Haripur route.

The arrest was made by the Sahil Investigation Police, who said Wajid had been working for an elderly couple for the past eight years. Over time, he gained their trust and access to their bank accounts, lockers, and valuables. Following the death of the elderly man four years ago, Wajid allegedly began siphoning off money while caring for the widow. Authorities are continuing to investigate the origins of his wealth.

This case follows a similar incident earlier this year in Defence, where another long-time domestic worker, Shehnaz, was arrested along with her son and a driver for stealing from her employers. Police had recovered Rs4.5 million in cash, three vehicles, and property documents worth millions.

The recurring incidents have raised concerns over security checks and verification of domestic staff in affluent Karachi neighborhoods, with police urging homeowners to strengthen background screening before employment.
