Fazl terms 27th amendment a threat to democracy

Published on: November 25, 2025 4:46 PM

JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has rejected the 27th Constitutional Amendment, calling it a threat to democracy. He said the amendment undermines parliamentary procedures and coerces lawmakers. The party council unanimously endorsed his rejection of the measure.

Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, Fazl compared the 27th Amendment to the 26th, which passed after consensus with the opposition. He said the government failed to consult opposition parties this time, bypassing democratic norms.

He criticized the current administration for claiming a fabricated two-thirds majority, saying such tactics violate democratic principles. Fazl stressed that coercion and unilateral decisions weaken public trust in governance.

Addressing the judiciary, he claimed the amendment also undermines the constitutional court’s role in democracy. He said JUI-F has always supported the court but was sidelined in this process.

Fazl also condemned the presidential pardon associated with the amendment, calling it unconstitutional. He urged the government to respect democratic values and involve opposition parties in key decisions.
