Russian tanker hit by drone off Turkey, crew safe

Published on: December 2, 2025 10:30 PM

A Russian-flagged tanker carrying sunflower oil reported a drone attack off the Turkish coast on Tuesday. All 13 crew members remained unharmed. The vessel, MIDVOLGA-2, continued sailing toward Sinop port without requesting assistance.

The Turkish Maritime Affairs Directorate confirmed the attack but did not reveal further details. Tribeca Resources, the shipping agency, stated the drone struck the tanker, but the attacker remains unknown. The vessel was moving steadily, ensuring crew safety.

The tanker was reportedly traveling from Russia to Georgia, while Tribeca noted its destination as Mersin. Despite the strike, it maintained course toward Sinop, signaling no urgent distress. Turkish authorities informed relevant parties, including Ukrainian officials, about the incident.

This event follows recent Ukrainian naval drone strikes on Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea. Turkish President Erdogan condemned attacks on commercial vessels, emphasizing maritime safety and legal accountability. He warned all parties to avoid targeting civilian ships.

Turkey has maintained cordial ties with both Russia and Ukraine during the war. It has hosted peace talks and promoted navigational safety. NATO membership does not prevent Turkey from balancing relations while ensuring Black Sea security.
