SYDNEY: Chaos and bravery unfolded at Bondi Beach on Sunday night as a father-and-son duo opened fire during a Jewish festival, killing 15 people and injuring dozens more. Crowds fled in panic, while a few courageous individuals risked their lives to rescue children and help the injured.

Off-duty lifeguards sprinted across the sand, pulling children to safety and performing CPR on victims. Surfboards were turned into makeshift stretchers to carry the wounded. A pregnant woman in the surf club went into labor and was rushed to hospital amid the chaos, with staff using every available bandage to treat the injured.

Among the heroes was fruit seller Ahmed Al Ahmed, 43, who confronted one of the gunmen, wrested the weapon away, and saved countless lives. US President Donald Trump praised Ahmed’s bravery, calling his actions “very, very brave” and life-saving.
Local businesses, including churches, bars, and grocery stores, opened their doors to shelter those fleeing the violence. Witnesses recounted the panic, with many hiding in cool rooms or improvised safe spaces as the attack unfolded. French visitor Alban Baton described the chaos, saying people instinctively ran for cover after spotting a gunman.
Australia has experienced few mass shootings since the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, which killed 35 people and led to sweeping gun reforms widely praised for enhancing safety. Sunday’s attack is the deadliest in nearly three decades, prompting nationwide mourning and highlighting both the terror of the incident and the courage of those who acted to protect others.
