Trump highlights first-year achievements in pre-holiday address

Published on: December 18, 2025 11:32 AM

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump delivered a pre-holiday address from the White House on Wednesday, portraying his first year in office as a success despite Americans’ concerns about the economy and Republicans facing challenging midterm elections in 2026.

Trump opened by blaming former President Joe Biden for ongoing issues, mentioning him seven times. He cited high living costs, crime, healthcare, and immigration policies as problems inherited from Biden, while promising that the US was “poised for an economic boom the likes of which the world has never seen.”

The speech was delivered from the Diplomatic Reception Room rather than the Oval Office, giving it a rally-like feel. Trump stood behind a podium flanked by flags and holiday decorations, speaking at a brisk pace. Holiday greetings were minimal, limited to a brief “Merry Christmas” and “Happy New Year” at the end.

“Tonight after 11 months, our border is secure, inflation is stopped, wages are up, prices are down, our nation is strong, America is respected, and our country is back stronger than ever before.”… pic.twitter.com/uPgJLnn7rR

Despite advance speculation, the address included few major policy announcements. Trump mentioned plans for new housing initiatives, the naming of a Federal Reserve chair, and sending $1,776 checks to US troops. The speech largely recycled familiar talking points from his rallies, including criticism of Somali communities in Minnesota, discussions about men in women’s sports, and references to the state of the nation when he took office.

Foreign policy received limited attention. While Trump has recently escalated pressure on Venezuela, including a blockade of sanctioned oil tankers, the speech focused mostly on domestic economic issues. His allies had suggested he emphasize kitchen-table issues over international conflicts, and the speech reflected that guidance.

Overall, the address reinforced Trump’s narrative of his administration’s accomplishments while deflecting responsibility for persistent challenges onto his predecessor. Analysts noted that while the speech offered political messaging ahead of 2026 elections, it provided little new information on forthcoming policies.
