OpenAI launches ChatGPT app store for developers

Published on: December 19, 2025 4:42 PM

OpenAI has officially opened an app store within ChatGPT, allowing developers to submit applications for review and publication. The move aims to expand the capabilities of the AI chatbot and offer users new ways to interact with third-party services.

Currently in beta, the Apps SDK provides developers with tools to create innovative experiences for ChatGPT users. Once an app is ready, developers can submit it via the OpenAI Developer platform and track its approval status throughout the process.

The ChatGPT app store also introduces a new app directory, accessible through the tools menu of the AI interface. This directory will serve as a central hub for users to discover and interact with approved apps.

OpenAI first announced plans to integrate apps into ChatGPT in October, signaling a shift toward making the chatbot a platform for broader digital services. Renowned companies such as Expedia, Spotify, Zillow, and Canva have already confirmed participation, enabling users to access their services directly through ChatGPT conversations.

According to OpenAI, the app integration is designed to enhance ChatGPT interactions. “Apps extend ChatGPT conversations by bringing in new context and allowing users to perform actions like ordering groceries, creating slide decks from outlines, or searching for apartments,” the company explained.

The initiative is also aimed at attracting a wider range of developers to participate, fostering a more diverse and useful ecosystem within ChatGPT. By opening the platform to third-party apps, OpenAI hopes to encourage creativity while enhancing functionality for users.

As the program progresses, several approved apps are expected to launch within ChatGPT over the coming year. The app store is poised to transform the chatbot into a more interactive and practical tool for everyday digital tasks
