Karachi set to become Pakistan most modern city: Sharjeel Memon

Published on: December 23, 2025 3:49 PM

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Tuesday said Karachi was on track to become the most modern and developed city in Pakistan, as the provincial government prioritises large-scale urban development across multiple sectors. He said sustained investment and strict oversight were driving visible progress in the metropolis.

In a statement, Memon emphasised that the Sindh government was working tirelessly to address Karachi’s long-standing infrastructure and service delivery challenges. Development, he said, had been placed at the top of the government’s agenda to improve the quality of life for residents.

Major investments have been directed towards road and transport infrastructure, with Rs194 billion allocated to improving traffic flow and connectivity. Key projects underway include the Shahrah-e-Bhutto Corridor, Malir River Bridge, and a network of new underpasses and flyovers aimed at reducing congestion.

The minister added that several flagship projects were scheduled to begin by March, with authorities instructed to ensure transparency, quality control, and timely completion. Monitoring mechanisms, he said, were being strengthened to prevent delays and cost overruns.

Healthcare has also been identified as a priority area, with Rs300 billion earmarked for the expansion and upgradation of nine District Headquarters (DHQ) hospitals in Karachi. The initiative aims to improve access to quality medical services for low- and middle-income communities.

Public transport reforms are another key focus, with Rs155.34 billion allocated for the Red, Yellow, and Orange Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects. These mass transit systems are expected to modernise urban mobility and reduce reliance on private vehicles.

Memon said the government’s broader vision for Karachi includes sustainable infrastructure, improved education facilities, affordable housing, and safer neighbourhoods. He stressed that all projects and investments were designed to promote long-term prosperity and ensure tangible improvements for the city’s population.
