India has given Elon Musk’s X just 72 hours to fix its AI chatbot Grok after reports of obscene content. The government demanded that Grok restrict sexually explicit and unlawful material. Failure to comply could endanger X’s legal protections under India’s IT laws.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued the directive on Friday, asking X to implement technical and procedural safeguards. The platform must prevent the creation and distribution of nudity, sexualisation, or illegal content. X must submit an action report within three days detailing its compliance.

The move follows complaints from users and lawmakers about AI-altered images of women, some made to appear in bikinis. Reports also flagged instances involving sexualised depictions of minors. X acknowledged lapses and removed some images, but others remained accessible at the time of review.
MeitY warned that noncompliance could lead to action under India’s IT framework and criminal laws. The advisory stressed that platforms must enforce safeguards to retain legal immunity. The order comes amid X challenging parts of India’s content regulation rules in court.
