KARACHI: More than 115 tola of gold jewellery was stolen from two homes in Karachi within days, police said on Friday, in what authorities called among the largest domestic thefts reported in the city this year. The thefts occurred in Mohammad Ali Society and Bahadurabad, and were allegedly carried out by two housemaids, identified as Nadia and Dilshad.

In the Mohammad Ali Society case, over 100 tola of gold, valued at more than Rs45 million, was taken while the homeowners were visiting relatives. Police said the maids had been hired only a day earlier on the recommendation of the building’s security guard. CCTV footage reportedly shows the women fleeing the scene, and the case has been registered at the Bahadurabad police station.

A separate incident in Bahadurabad on January 5 involved 15 tola of gold, including earrings, rings, and other ornaments, reportedly stolen from a wardrobe drawer. Police investigations indicate the suspects had worked in the area as housemaids for around two weeks and are believed to be habitual offenders.

The combined value of the stolen gold from both incidents is estimated at over Rs60 million. Authorities have launched a search operation to arrest the suspects and recover the missing jewellery. Police have urged residents to exercise caution when hiring domestic staff and to verify references thoroughly.
