MUMBAI: Bollywood is witnessing a heated exchange between actor-director Kangana Ranaut and music composer AR Rahman. The controversy erupted after Kangana accused Rahman of refusing to meet her regarding her film Emergency and labeling the project as “propaganda.”

Emergency, directed by and starring Kangana, is a historical drama based on India’s Emergency period in the 1970s. Kangana claimed she had approached Rahman to compose music for the film, hoping his iconic touch would enhance the project. She expressed disappointment that he dismissed the film without hearing her vision, calling him “the most hateful and prejudiced” person she has encountered.

In her social media post, Kangana added that several respected critics and industry leaders had appreciated Emergency, yet Rahman allegedly stayed away due to preconceived notions. She emphasized her hurt as an artist and her disbelief that someone she admired for years could make such judgments.

The clash comes in the wake of Rahman’s remarks about the Hindi film industry becoming “communal,” comments that had already triggered mixed reactions. While Rahman later clarified that his words were misunderstood and not intended to offend, Kangana’s public response has intensified the debate.

Fans are divided over the controversy, with some supporting Kangana’s boldness and honesty, while others feel that private professional matters should remain confidential. Rahman has not directly responded to Kangana’s remarks so far.
