Israeli army confirms 71,000 deaths in Gaza

Published on: January 30, 2026 5:45 PM

The Israeli army has acknowledged that at least 71,000 Palestinians have died in Gaza since October 7, 2023. A senior military official confirmed that the Hamas-run Health Ministry’s casualty figures are largely accurate. The announcement covers deaths caused directly by Israeli military operations and marks a rare official admission.

The figures exclude people who died from starvation, disease, or being trapped under rubble. The ministry’s numbers have long been rejected by Israel, but the United Nations has repeatedly deemed them reliable. Israeli authorities said they are still reviewing the data to separate civilian and militant casualties.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, 71,667 Palestinians have been killed in the attacks so far. The toll highlights the scale of destruction and human suffering in Gaza. Israel continues to face international pressure to protect civilians and allow humanitarian aid access.

Israeli officials said further verification is ongoing to ensure accurate categorization of victims. Meanwhile, global organizations and human rights groups have called for investigations into the killings and measures to prevent further loss of life. The acknowledgment may influence diplomatic discussions and aid delivery in the region.

Observers say the rare admission could impact negotiations on accountability and reconstruction. International bodies continue monitoring Gaza’s humanitarian crisis closely. The announcement underscores the urgent need for a ceasefire and immediate humanitarian relief.
