Giant portrait of Gaza girl unfurled in Barcelona protest

Published on: February 3, 2026 9:55 PM

Protesters in Barcelona unveiled a massive portrait of five-year-old Palestinian girl Hind Rajab on the city’s beach, commemorating her death during the Gaza war and drawing attention to children’s plight in the conflict.

Hind’s final cries for help, while trapped in a car under Israeli fire during the October 2023 offensive, were depicted in the award-winning film The Voice of Hind Rajab, which won the Silver Lion at Venice and is Academy Award-nominated.

During the offensive, Hind was pinned for hours in a car while pleading for Palestinian medics to rescue her, as her aunt, uncle, and three cousins were already killed; bodies, including two ambulance workers, were recovered twelve days later.

At the protest, several hundred people held a 55-metre-long tarp of Hind’s face alongside a Palestinian flag and the message “Free Gaza’s Children,” highlighting ongoing concerns over the safety and rights of Gaza’s youth.

Hind’s mother, Wesam Hamada, emphasized that children in Gaza seek the right to live safely, sleep without fear, play freely, and grow up without violence, urging the international community to act.

The United Nations has described Gaza’s humanitarian situation as “dire,” reporting severe shortages of shelter, food, and basic services for children three months into the ceasefire, following the devastating two-year war.
