US blasts South Africa over Israeli diplomat expulsion

Published on: February 4, 2026 3:54 PM

The United States has strongly condemned South Africa’s decision to expel Israel’s top diplomat, calling the move politically motivated and damaging to diplomatic stability. American officials said the action reflects grievance-based politics instead of responsible international engagement and dialogue.

According to the State Department, the diplomat was targeted after publicly criticizing the ruling African National Congress for its alleged ties to Hamas and other extremist groups. Washington argued that removing a foreign envoy for political speech undermines democratic values and weakens diplomatic norms.

Meanwhile, South Africa defended its decision by accusing the Israeli diplomat of violating diplomatic rules and insulting President Cyril Ramaphosa. Authorities declared him persona non grata and ordered him to leave the country within seventy-two hours.

In response, Israel swiftly expelled South Africa’s senior diplomatic representative, signaling a sharp escalation in already strained relations. As a result, both countries have effectively downgraded their diplomatic presence and cooperation.

Tensions between the two nations have remained high since South Africa filed a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice over its military campaign in Gaza. Israel rejected the accusations, describing its actions as self-defense following the October 2023 Hamas attacks.

Furthermore, the dispute has also strained ties between Washington and Pretoria, as U.S. President Donald Trump previously imposed trade sanctions and cut funding. Overall, the episode highlights deepening global divisions over the Gaza conflict and international accountability.
