Geopolitical tensions between Pakistan and India are reportedly influencing cricket scheduling, with the International Cricket Council (ICC) considering relocating major future events to Australia, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

Australia could serve as an alternative host for the ICC Champions Trophy 2029 and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2031, both currently slated to be hosted by India and co-hosted by Bangladesh. The move comes amid uncertainty during the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
Pakistan initially announced it would boycott a group-stage match against India over security concerns tied to Bangladesh’s removal from the tournament. Islamabad later reversed its decision following high-level consultations with friendly countries, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), ICC representatives, and the Bangladesh Cricket Board, avoiding a potential $250 million financial loss.
The cricketing friction reflects broader geopolitical tensions, including a brief war in May 2025 mediated by the United States. During recent tournaments like the Asia Cup 2024 and T20 World Cup matches, Indian players refrained from customary post-match handshakes with Pakistani counterparts, continuing a long-standing rivalry. Bilateral series between the two nations have been suspended since 2012–13, with New Delhi barring tours to Pakistan.
In 2024, the PCB and India’s Board of Control for Cricket agreed to a “hybrid model” for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, playing matches at neutral venues rather than in each other’s countries.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that global cricket administrators are holding contingency discussions to identify backup venues for major tournaments, ensuring uninterrupted events despite political tensions. Australia has a history of hosting high-profile India–Pakistan fixtures, including the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup in Adelaide and the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Melbourne, drawing crowds of 41,587 and 90,293 respectively.
